Here's The UWS High School Named Neighborhood's Best: U.S. News
U.S. News and World Report released its annual list of the best public high schools in the country. Here's the highest-ranking UWS school.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Upper West Side didn't have a particularly strong showing in new rankings of the best public high schools in the country and state by U.S. News and World Report. There was no UWS educational institution in the top 25 of the publication's best public high schools in New York state.
Fiorello H. Laguardia High School ranked number 26 in New York and number 243 nationally in the list of U.S. News Best Public High School for 2021, an annual ranking of how high schools compare at the national, state, and local level.
It was the top-ranked public high school on the Upper West Side.

The iconic performing arts school has a long list of famous alumni, including Adrien Brody, Jennifer Aniston, Timothee Chalamet, Ansel Elgort, and Nicki Minaj.
Beacon High School was the only other Upper West Side school to earn a spot in the ranking's top 100 New York public high schools.

Here's a look at the top 10 public high schools in New York, all of which are located in the five boroughs:
- Townsend Harris High School, Flushing
- Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn
- High School Math Science and Engineering at CCNY, Manhattan
- Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Jamaica
- Bronx High School of Science, Bronx
- Staten Island Technical High School, Staten Island
- Stuyvesant High School, Manhattan
- High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Bronx
- Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn
- High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies, Manhattan
The methodology used for this year's ranking focused on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.
The data used in this edition is from the 2018-2019 academic school year and, therefore, was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The purpose of the rankings is to provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups, showing how well schools are supporting these students, Anita Narayan, managing editor of education at U.S. News, said in a news release.
This year's list ranks more than 17,800 public high schools throughout the country.
