Lox Of Chatter: Beloved UWS Deli Zabar's Starts A Podcast

Host Willie Zabar, a fourth-generation member of the family business, takes listeners through the history and character of the UWS deli.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Zabar's name is synonymous with the Upper West Side and a new podcast takes you on a journey through the history of the iconic deli and the many characters that brought it to life.

Willie Zabar, a fourth-generation member of the family business and stand-up comedian, recently created the "The Zabar's Podcast."

The first 10-minute episode debuted on May 17, with two more podcasts released in the weeks since.

The episodes cover everything including the founding of the business in 1934, from the contributions made by different generations of the Zabar family to the business, to how the store manages 400,000 pounds of coffee every year, and interviews with loyal customers.

Zabar's has recently jumped into the news for a variety of non-food related topics, including a surprisingly stylish collaboration with the shoe company Vans, its 91-year-old lox slicer Len Berk returning to work and getting honored by local politicians, and Rep. Jerry Nadler bringing a Zabar's bag to the floor of the House during former President Donald Trump's impeachment hearings.

Zabar's is located at 2245 Broadway, between West 80th and 81st Streets.

The official description of the podcast reads, "The Zabar's Podcast explores the history and personalities behind one of New York City's most beloved grocery stores. In each episode, 4th-generation deli man Willie Zabar dives into a different aspect of the store through conversations with employees, customers, and culinary experts."
