Man Killed By E-Bike Was Manager Of UWS' Jing Fong Restaurant

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Police announced on Thursday that 71-year-old Hing Chung died after he was hit by an E-Bike on April 17th on Amsterdam and West 78th Street. In the hours after that announcement, Gothamist reported that Chung was the manager of a popular dim sum restaurant in the neighborhood.

Chung managed the Upper West Side Jing Fong location on Amsterdam and 78th Street, where earlier in the month, he was hit by an E-Bike outside the restaurant after he stepped out from between two parked cars into the bike lane.

Chung died on April 25 from injuries sustained in that impact.

"He's very friendly. He made jokes with employees," an assistant manager at Jing Fong told Gothamist. "All the customers love him a lot."

Jing Fong has an outpost on the Upper West Side, but its iconic Chinatown location sits at 20 Elizabeth Street.

Chung immigrated to New York City from Hong Kong more than 30 years ago and had one son, according to Gothamist.

The rider of the E-Bike remained at the scene after the crash and was not charged. However, the investigation does remain ongoing.
