The Metropolitan Opera Cancels Entire 2020-21 Season

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Metropolitan Opera announced on Wednesday it is canceling the entirety of its 2020-21 arts season, due to the advice of health officials who oversee the Met and Lincoln Center.

The Metropolitan Opera House is located within Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

"Health officials have said this will likely take at least five to six months after a vaccine is initially made available," the Met said Wednesday. "We want nothing more than to get back to creating operatic magic as only the Met can, but the safety of our company and the audience we serve must come first."

We regret to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020–21 season, based on the advice of health officials. However, we are pleased to be able to announce the Met’s 2021–22 season, which will open Sep. 27, 2021.

The Met also announced its plans for the 2021-22 season, which will begin Sept. 27 of next year with the Met premiere of Terrence Blanchard's "Fire Shut up in my Bones" — the first opera by a Black composer to be performed at the Met.
