Old John's Diner Reopening This Week On The Upper West Side

The 70-year-old UWS diner closed in the fall of 2020. After fears it was gone forever, a former employee is bringing it back.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An official reopening date of sorts was recently announced for the iconic Old John's Luncheonette diner, which will come back to the Upper West Side as Old John's on Wednesday.

Old John's Luncheonette's closed in the fall of 2020 due to the pandemic after 70 years in the neighborhood. After initial reports that the diner would permanently closed, a new ownership group announced it would be reopening the popular diner with some slight changes.

The diner will be reopening Wednesday in its original location at 148 West 67th Street.

Successful New York City restaurateur Louis Skibar, who has opened 18 restaurants in the past three decades, is leading the new ownership group.

It is a personal reopening for Skibar.

Skibar worked as a delivery driver for Old John's Luncheonette when he first emigrated to New York City from Bolivia in 1984. He returns as the owner.

"They know your name. They greet you with a warm smile. They don't simply wait on you...they welcome you into the home away from home that is Old John's," reads a note from Kathy Dellinger, a 22-year customer at Old John's, displayed on the diner's website. "They make you feel like family. Old John's is truly a jewel in the crown of the Upper West Side."
