UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The first full-length trailer for Steven Spielberg's remake of "West Side Story" came out during the Oscar Awards on Sunday.

Spielberg's film rendition of the iconic 1961 Broadway show was originally set for release by Christmas 2020, but ended up getting pushed back because of the pandemic.

"West Side Story" is set in San Juan Hill, which was the nickname for the Lincoln Square area of the Upper West Side before it got developed into Lincoln Center during the early 1960s. Specifically, the two rival gangs come face to face on 68th Street between West End and Amsterdam.

"This has been a journey without precedence: a joyful, stunning, moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world's greatest musicals," Spielberg wrote in a letter to audiences upon wrapping the film. "We filmed West Side Story all over New York, Flatbush to Fort Tryon Park. The city lent us its beauty and its energy, and we drew deeply upon its grand multicultural, multifaceted spirit."

The movie is expected to be in theaters on Dec. 10.
