Water Main Break Floods Amsterdam Avenue on Upper West Side

A water main busted in the upper 80s on Amsterdam Avenue, causing a flooding mess and opening a sinkhole on the street.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A busted water main on the Upper West Side caused flooding in multiple buildings late Monday night.

The FDNY said they were called to Amsterdam Avenue in the West 80s at 9 p.m., and the break wasn't brought under control until 11:02 p.m. when the Department of Environmental Protection was able to shut off the water.

DEP initially said Monday night there was enough redundancy in the area that no buildings would be without water. People in the neighborhood told a different story on Tuesday morning though. A DEP spokesperson confirmed Tuesday afternoon about 350 customers were without water. Service was restored by Tuesday evening, DEP said.

DEP worked to isolate the leak at West 89th Street overnight. Tuesday afternoon, a DEP spokesman said Con Edison crews were "moving some subsurface equipment to allow DEP crews access to the main to make necessary repairs." The cause of the water main break was still under investigation.

In addition to flooding the basements of several businesses, a sinkhole opened up in front of 167 W. 89th St., swallowing an SUV.

The FDNY said they searched basements and there were no injuries. The DEP, however, would be on scene "most of the night" pumping water out of the businesses.

The water flooded streets from West 87th Street up to West 90th Street.
