Who Profits From Upper West Side's Barnard College--Part 4

Do some administrators and professors at Barnard get paid more than what NYC mayor or most NYC essential women workers are paid annually?

Besides paying over $1.3 million in 2018 “for investment management fees” to for-profit firms like the Bertarelli family-backed Strategic Investment firm, “non-profit” Barnard College also paid total annual compensations to its administrators and some professors that were a lot more than what most essential women workers and consumers in New York City are paid each year.

Between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, for example, at least 14 Barnard College administrators or professors were apparently paid total annual compensations that exceeded the annual salary, of less than $260,000, that the Mayor of New York City was paid during that same period:

1. Barnard College President Sian Leah Beilock was paid a total annual compensation of $820,263;

3. Barnard College Chief Operating Officer Robert Goldberg was paid a total annual compensation of $493,132;

4. Barnard College Provost and Dean of the Faculty Linda Bell was paid a total annual compensation of $442,990;

5. Barnard College Professor Rae Silver was paid a total annual compensation of $383,771;

6. Barnard College Vice-President for Enrollment Jennifer Fondiller was paid a total annual compensation of $350,568;

7. Barnard College Vice-President for Legal Affairs & General Counsel Jomysha Stephen was paid a total annual compensation of $349,129;

8. Barnard College Professor Peter Balsam was paid a total annual compensation of $297,482;

9. Barnard College Professor Janet Jakobsen was paid a total annual compensation of $293,868;

10. Barnard College Vice-President for Communications Justin Harmon was paid a total annual compensation of $288,935;

11. Barnard College Professor David Weiman was paid a total annual compensation of $287,760;

12. Barnard College Professor William Worthen was paid a total annual compensation of $282,268;

13. Barnard College Vice-President for Finance Eileen M. Di Benedetto was paid a total annual compensation of $269,119; and

14. Barnard College Vice-President for Information Technology Carol M. Katzman was paid a total annual compensation of $261,112.

Yet as Robert Finch observed long ago, in his 1996 book The Assassination of New York, “what does `non-profit’ mean when the average nonprofit executive director’s salary in New York is upwards of $175,000?”; and “at a minimum, there should be a stiff wage tax on nonprofit executives who make more than the mayor.”

In addition, between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, Barnard College Vice-President For Human Resources Catherine Geddis was also paid a total annual compensation of $251,062, Barnard College Deputy Dean and Director of Family Engagement Natalie J. Friedman was also paid a total annual compensation of $187,834 and Barnard College Dean of the College Avis Hinkson was also paid a total annual compensation of $178,530.

And, according to Barnard College’s Form 990 financial filing for 2018, over 224 individuals employed by tax-exempt and non-profit Barnard College “received more than $100,000 of reportable compensation from the organization,” between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. (end of part 4. To be continued).
