5 Schools Still Closed In Upper Manhattan Due To COVID-19 Cases
Nine schools reopened in Upper Manhattan over the past 10 days, but five new schools in Washington Heights and Inwood have closed.
UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — Coronavirus cases have temporarily closed down five schools in Washington Heights and Inwood, according to the city.
Over the past nine days, the Center for Preschool and Family Learning, P.S. 178, P.S. 5, P.S. 278, and P.S. 18 shuttered their doors.
The five closures in Upper Manhattan come as nine different schools in Washington Heights and Inwood reopened during the period.

According to the Department of Education's guidelines, school buildings must automatically close pending an investigation when at least two COVID-19 cases linked to each other are confirmed in separate classrooms. The closure is extended when the infections occurred outside of school or a link between them cannot be determined.

Center For Preschool And Family Learning, 529 West 155th Street: The school closed on Jan. 29 and is expected to reopen on Jan. 30.
P.S. 178, 12-18 Ellwood Street: The school closed on Jan. 22 and is expected to reopen on Jan. 31. The closure happened because of cases found in classrooms in the Professor Juan Bosch Public School.
P.S. 5, 3703 Tenth Avenue: The school closed on Jan. 21 and is expected to reopen on Jan. 30. The closure happened because of cases found in classrooms in the Ellen Lurie School.
P.S./I.S. 278, 421 West 219th Street: The school closed on Jan. 25 and is expected to reopen on Feb. 3. The closure happened because of cases found in the Paula Hedbavny School.
P.S. 18, 4124 9th Avenue: The school closed on Jan. 25 and is expected to reopen on Feb. 3.
