COVID-19 Rate In Inwood Drops Under 7% For First Time In Months

The 10034 and 10040 ZIP codes in Inwood have COVID-19 positive rates under 7 percent for the first time since the beginning of December.

INWOOD, NY — For the first time in months, the seven-day COVID-19 positive average in the two ZIP codes that make up Inwood have fallen under 7 percent.

The neighborhood has consistently outpaced the rest of Manhattan in its COVID-19 positive rate, including even those seen in nearby Washington Heights.

The 10040 ZIP code specifically, which does include a small part of Washington Heights along with Inwood, has registered not just the highest COVID-19 positive rate in the borough, but at times — the highest in New York City.

Thankfully, as more Upper Manhattanites continue to get vaccinated, it appears that the COVID-19 rates in the 10040 and 10034 ZIP codes are finally trending downwards.

Manhattan residents recently passed the 25 percent vaccinated mark.

For the first time since the opening days of December, the seven-day positive average in the two ZIP codes is under 7 percent.

Here's the most recent seven-day average COVID-19 data, from March 9 through March 15, for the two ZIP codes:

  • 10034: 6.45 percent positive, 977 people tested, 63 new positive tests
  • 10040: 6.14 percent positive, 1,091 people tested, 67 new positives

It is important to mention that the figures are still currently two of the three highest seven-day average positive rates of any Manhattan ZIP code.

However, for comparison, on Feb. 22, the seven-day COVID-19 positive average in the 10034 ZIP code was 8.96 percent, and the average in the 10040 ZIP code was 10.52 percent.

At the time, it was the lone ZIP code in Manhattan to have a seven-day positive average over 10 percent.

Going back another month to Jan. 18, the COVID-19 rates in the two Inwood ZIP codes were 9.12 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively.

On Dec. 28, the 10034 ZIP code registered a seven-day average just under 7 percent, but the 10040 rate was 8.43 percent.

You have to go back to the beginning of December, before the surge in positive tests resulting from the holiday season, to find both Inwood ZIP codes with COVID-19 seven-day positive averages under the 7 percent mark.

On Dec. 1, the 10034 ZIP code had a positive rate of 4.06 percent, and the 10040 ZIP code had a 3.99 percent positive rate — showing just how big a jump was caused by people coming together around the holidays.
