First 'Wonderful Wednesday' Of Summer Coming To Fort Tryon Park

The Inwood park will host its first car-free night of family fun of the summer on July 7, featuring a free screening of "The Wizard of Oz."

INWOOD, NY — The Fort Tryon Park Trust and NYC Parks are launching "Wonderful Wednesdays" in the Upper Manhattan green space, which will take place for the first time on July 7, and two more times throughout the summer.

On the nights, the park's roads will close to cars from 6 to 11 p.m. and a variety of family-friendly activities will be offered throughout the Inwood park.

To kick off the first Wonderful Wednesday on July 7, the Fort Tryon Park Trust will present a free screening of "The Wizard of Oz" with a preshow concert by the Venzal Combo on Cloisters Lawn. Children's games and activities will also be available starting at 6 p.m..

Admission is free for all aspects of the night.

Here's the program schedule for July 7's Wonderful Wednesday.

  • 6:00 p.m. Kid’s games
  • 6:30 p.m. Latin jazz by Venzal Combo
  • 8:15 p.m. Introduction to the film by the grandson of Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West)
  • 8:30 p.m. Movie starts
  • 11:00 p.m. Park re-opens to auto traffic

On Wonderful Wednesdays, you can also join our regularly scheduled Sunset Yoga class on Abby’s Lawn from 6:45 – 8:00 p.m.

In the event of rain, the movie will be rescheduled, but the Fort Tryon Park Trust did not specify when the rain date would be.

The other Wonderful Wednesdays in Fort Tryon Park will take place on August 4 and September 1.
