Halloween won't be the same in 2020, but there are still fun, safe activities going on in Upper Manhattan.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Halloween won't be quite the same in 2020, but that does not mean there won't still be fun things to do around the neighborhood.

With the spooky holiday fast approaching, local organizations are sending invitations for a variety of Halloween themed events in Inwood and Washington Heights.

Halloween at Word Up (Candy & Costume Contest): Oct. 31

The Word Up Community Bookshop/Libreria Comunitaria is hosting a costume contest on Halloween for whoever wants to attend. The event will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday and include trick-or-treating, books, and a costume contest with prizes.

Word Up staff will dress up and play music for the duration of the event.

All the candy will be pre-packaged and quarantined for three days, and customers and attendees must wear masks and social distance. The bookstore is located at 2113 Amsterdam Avenue.

"Horror In The Heights" By Carlos Deschamps (Inwood Film Festival): Oct. 30

Inwood Art Works supports local filmmakers every Friday by featuring a free short film from the Inwood Film Festival.

On Oct. 30, the organization is getting in the Halloween spirit by featuring "Horror In The Heights" for free on its Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube channels.

The film will start at 3 p.m.

Lost Inwood: The Graveyards, Burials, and Skeletons Of Northern Manhattan: Oct. 30

There is not much more Halloween than graveyards, burials, and skeletons in your neighborhood.

The day before Halloween, the New York Adventure Club is teaming up with the President of the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum and local historian Don Rice to bring people on a virtual journey through the numerous graves, burials, and skeletons of northern Manhattan.

The event will take place on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m., and you can register for it here.

Here are some of the sites that the virtual "The Graves, Burials, and Skeletons of Northern Manhattan" tour will cover, according to Rice.

  • Old colonial graves at the intersection of Dyckman Street and Sherman Avenue
  • A larger colonial burial ground east of 10th Avenue and 212th Street.
  • A cemetery west of 10th Avenue and 212th Street.
  • A burial ground along Fort Washington Avenue for soldiers who died during the American Revolution, most likely during the Battle of Fort Washington in 1776.

Creepy Costume Halloween

Putting on a costume does not mean you don't have to get your cardio in.

The Dyckman Run Club is hosting a 5K run at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, with the meeting place across the Tryon Public House at 4740 Broadway.

The running club will host an after-party post-run at the Tryon Public House to celebrate the holiday.
