ZIP codes in Washington Heights and Inwood are the four highest in the borough. But, how do the area's rates in January compare to December?

UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — As the end of January comes around, COVID-19 rates continue to remain disproportionately elevated in Washington Heights and Inwood compared to the rest of Manhattan.

Upper Manhattan's ZIP codes have the current four highest COVID-19 seven-day positive rates in the borough.

The 10040 ZIP code, which includes the northern Washington Heights and Fort George area, has the highest seven-day positive rate in the borough at 10.4 percent.

However, how have Upper Manhattan positive rates changed in the last month?

The answer is up.

Here is the full breakdown for the four ZIP codes in Upper Manhattan between Jan. 18 and 24th.

  • 10034 — Inwood: 1,590 people tested, 145 new cases, 9.12 percent positive
  • 10040 — Washington Heights (North): 1,567 people tested, 163 new cases, 10.4 percent positive
  • 10033 — Washington Heights: 2,195 people tested, 192 new cases, 8.75 percent positive
  • 10032 — Washington Heights (South): 2,662 people tested, 226 new cases, 8.49 percent positive

Here is that same breakdown for the four ZIP codes, but this time between Dec. 18 and 24th.

  • 10034 — Inwood: 1,283 people tested, 83 new cases, 6.47 percent positive
  • 10040 — Washington Heights (North): 1,340 people tested, 113 new cases, 8.43 percent positive
  • 10033 — Washington Heights: 1,917 people tested, 153 new cases, 7.98 percent positive
  • 10032 — Washington Heights (South): 2,173 people tested, 121 new cases, 5.57 percent positive

The positive rates in all four ZIP codes have gone up over the past month.

The overall average in Washington Heights and Inwood has gone from 7.11 percent during the week of Dec. 18, to 9.19 percent during the week of Jan. 18.

The biggest jump was seen in the 10032 ZIP code, which saw its rate go from 5.57 percent to 8.49 percent. While COVID-19 rates have risen across the city, only a few neighborhoods in Harlem and Chinatown have seen similar sort of jumps over the past month.
