Uptown COVID Rate Falls Under 2%, But Inwood Near Top In Borough
Twenty days after the average COVID-19 rate fell under 4 percent in the four Upper Manhattan ZIP codes, the rate is now below 2 percent.
UPPER MANHATTAN, NY — The COVID-19 seven-day average in Upper Manhattan continues to plummet downward as the vaccination rate goes up, but one area of Inwood still has the third-highest virus positivity rate in the borough.
All four of the ZIP codes that make up Washington Heights and Inwood have a positivity rate of under 2 percent, according to the latest seven-day average data provided by the city.
The most recent average signifies huge strides the Upper Manhattan community has made in combatting the coronavirus. To give perspective on the downward trend, the COVID-19 rate in Washington Heights and Inwood on April 21 was 3.60 percent, and the rate on Feb. 22 was 8.17 percent.

While the COVID-19 rate is significantly falling in Upper Manhattan, the 10034 ZIP in Inwood still has the third-highest rate in the borough at 1.93 percent. It trails only the Central Harlem 10039 ZIP code and East Harlem's 10029 ZIP code — both of which have rates over 2.50 percent.
Here's the COVID-19 information for all four Upper Manhattan ZIP codes from April 30 to May 6:

- 10034: 1.93 percent positivity rate, 1,089 people tested, 21 new positives
- 10040: 1.60 percent positivity rate, 1,186 people tested, 19 new positives
- 10033: 1.39 percent positivity rate, 1,659 people tested, 23 new positives
- 10032: 1.14 percent positivity rate, 1,924 people tested, 22 new positives
As of Sunday, the single-day COVID-19 rate in Manhattan dropped to 0.55 percent and the seven-day average to 0.75 percent. The number signifies 34 straight days of decline.
Additionally, the 10034 might be near the top of the Manhattan COVID-19 rates, but dozens of ZIP codes in the four other boroughs have seven-day averages of over 2 percent.
