Uptown March In Solidarity With Asians To Start In The Heights

The march will take place on Sunday and go from Washington Heights through East Harlem. Here's more information.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — The "Uptown March in Solidarity with Asians in America" will take off from Washington Heights on Sunday at noon.

Marchers will walk through Washington Heights, Harlem, and East Harlem to "demand an end to white supremacy, imperialism, and misogyny — the root causes of anti-Asian violence," organizers of the march wrote in a description of the event.

  • Leave from Mitchel Square Park (Broadway and 168th Street) at noon.
  • March through Harlem, stopping at the 125th Street Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building.
  • Arrive in East Harlem at the People's Church for the end of the march at 3 p.m.

"We call upon Latinx, Indigenous, Black, Asian and white people across New York City to unite in the ongoing fight against racial capitalism and the carceral systems that uphold it," organizers wrote.

The march on Sunday comes as New York City is experiencing an unprecedented surge in violence against Asian Americans.

In the first week of April, the NYPD reported there were 31 hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in March 2021, averaging out to one per day, and compared to zero hate crimes that targeted Asian New Yorkers in March 2020.

Organizers of the Uptown March in Solidarity with Asians in America ask for those to come to wear masks and social distance responsibly.
