Wash Heights Council Race: Carmen De La Rosa Takes Early Lead

Carmen De La Rosa's lead is based only on people's first choice, and only for votes cast in person. Full results will likely take weeks.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Assembly Member Carmen De La Rosa has taken an early lead as the first-choice, in-person votes roll in for Upper Manhattan's 10th District City Council primary race, according to election night results.

As with most races in the June 22 primary, official winners will likely not be declared Tuesday given the new ranked-choice voting system, but first-choice, in-person picks had been tallied in some races across the five boroughs.

With 100 percent of District 10 precinct's first-choice votes reported, De La Rosa has received 40 percent of the top votes, according to NY1.

There were no Republican candidates in the election for District 10 — occasionally a candidate will run as an independent after the primary date in the November election — but whoever wins Tuesday night's Democratic primary will almost certainly be the new council member for Washington Heights, Inwood, and Marble Hill.

Before the election, De La Rosa told Patch that she has "what it takes to build citywide coalitions and deliver the results our community desperately needs."
