5 Lower Manhattan High Schools Named Among Best In NY: U.S. News
While none of the top-ranked high schools are in the West Village, a few of the highly-rated schools are within walking distance.
LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — Lower Manhattan had a strong showing in new rankings of the best public high schools in the country and state by U.S. News and World Report. There were five downtown Manhattan educational institutions in the top 35 of the publication's best public high schools in New York state.
Two of those schools earned a place in the top 10, with Stuyvesant High School ranking as the seventh-best public high school in New York and the High School for Dual Langauge and Asian Studies ranking as the 10th best.
Stuyvesant, located at 345 Chambers Street, is routinely ranked as one of the best schools in New York City. In U.S. News' 2021 rankings, the Tribeca-based school was ranked No. 1 in the state for math and reading proficiency.

Here are the five Lower Manhattan schools named among the 35 best public high schools in New York.
The Manhattan Village Academy in Chelsea is the closest to the West Village out of the five highly ranked Lower Manhattan schools.

- 7th Best in NY, 44th Best in the Country

High School for Dual Langauge and Asian Studies
- 10th Best in NY, 69th Best in the Country

Millennium High School
- 16th Best in NY, 150th Best in the Country
- 75 Broad Street
New Explorations Into Science, Tech and Math High School (NEST)
- 28th Best in NY, 256 Best in the Country
- 111 Columbia Street
Manhattan Village Academy
- 32nd Best in NY, 269 Best in the Country
- 43 West 22nd Street
The methodology used for this year's ranking focused on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.
The data used in this edition is from the 2018-2019 academic school year and, therefore, was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The purpose of the rankings is to provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups, showing how well schools are supporting these students, Anita Narayan, managing editor of education at U.S. News, said in a news release.
This year's list ranks more than 17,800 public high schools throughout the country.

- Townsend Harris High School, Flushing
- Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn
- High School Math Science and Engineering at CCNY, Manhattan
- Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Jamaica
- Bronx High School of Science, Bronx
- Staten Island Technical High School, Staten Island
- Stuyvesant High School, Manhattan
- High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Bronx
- Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn
- High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies, Manhattan
