One Fifth opened at One Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village, overlooking Washington Square Park.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — A buzz worthy Italian restaurant opened its doors in Greenwich Village this month.

One Fifth, opened fittingly at One Fifth Avenue (Eighth Street), on Wednesday within a near century old building.

"Located at the iconic namesake address overlooking Washington Square Park, One Fifth is the latest restaurant from Marc Forgione and his team," reads a section of the restaurant's website. "One Fifth takes its seasonal cues from the neighboring Union Square Greenmarket and is grounded in a classic New York sensibility, with an Italian accent."

The news of the One Fifth opening earned a leading spot in the New York Times latest write-up of new Big Apple eateries.

"Though the restaurant’s approach is Italian, like its predecessor, Mr. Forgione’s menu, executed with the chef Robert Zwirz, reinvents the standard repertoire," reads the write-up in the Times.

The One Fifth team shared a message on Instagram the day before opening.

"Tomorrow we open the doors to One Fifth," the One Fifth team wrote. "We can't wait to share what our team has been working on. A space rich with history, a menu inspired by our community and a bar where you'll never meet a stranger; we hope to see you here soon."

Restaurants have operated within the One Fifth Avenue address since 1927.

The recent history of the space hosted a seafood restaurant at the address throughout the nineties ran by Alfred Portale, the celebrated chef of Gotham Bar & Grill, which was then followed by Vince and Linda — where no other than Anthony Bourdain headed the kitchen.

Enoteca e Pizzeria followed in 2003, becoming a main stay of the neighborhood before closing because of the pandemic.

One Fifth is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m.
