Artists, Submit Your Designs for New LGBT Monument in Hudson River Park
Gov. Cuomo announced the state will be soliciting ideas for the monument, to be built near Pier 51.
WEST VILLAGE, NY — Artists looking to leave a lasting imprint on the LGBT community now have their chance to do so. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday the state would begin accepting submissions from artists for the LGBT Memorial proposed by Cuomo in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando this summer.
The monument will be located in the West Village's Hudson River Park between Bethune Street and West 12th Street. The state has budgeted $800,000 for the monument, with up to 20 percent ($160,000) of that going to the artist.
The governor's press release notes "experienced artists" are invited to submit designs for the monument by Nov. 21. Those wishing to do so, should click here.

Artists will need to meet a handful of requirements in the submission process. They must provide a statement of artistic qualifications, noting "prior experience in public art projects and/or working with art programs or projects that have addressed the LGBT community is a plus." The artist must also provide a statement of intent and memorial design, including site plans, elevations and 3D rendering.
"New York has a storied history of being at the forefront of the fight for equal rights and it is essential that we always honor the people who sought to achieve fairness for the LGBT community," Cuomo said in a statement. "I invite all experienced New York artists from Buffalo to Montauk to submit their vision and help us create a monument that will serve as an enduring symbol of the sacrifice New Yorkers have played in building a fairer, more just world."
