Asian Man Attacked Entering LES Subway Station: NYPD

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — An Asian man was punched in the face and knocked out cold as he was entering the East Broadway and Rutgers Street F train station on the Lower East Side, according to police.

The attack, which the NYPD are classifying as a potential anti-Asian hate crime, took place on Tuesday at 8:50 p.m., according to police.

The 56-year-old was taken to a hospital to treat a cut on his lip, a black eye and head swelling, police said.

Police released a picture Wednesday of a man wanted in connection to the attack.

The assault of the man on Tuesday comes days after a 36-year-old Asian man was brutally stabbed outside the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse in Chinatown.

The man, 36, was stabbed from behind by an 8-inch knife and required emergency surgery to remove his kidney, The New York Daily News reported.

There have been 29 reported racially-motivated crimes against Asian people in 2020 in New York City, with 24 of those attributed to "coronavirus motivation," according to NYPD data.

Additionally, there has been an uptick of recent attacks against Asian Americans across the country, many of which have happened in the California Bay Area.
