Famed Coyote Ugly Bar Reopening In New 14th Street Spot: Report

The decades-old Coyote Ugly bar shut down in the fall of 2020 after failed rent negotiations. It's now reopening in a new location.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — The Coyote Ugly Saloon served customers in the East Village for 27 years before it had to close its doors in September 2020 after failing to work through rent negotiations with its landlord.

The iconic bar now appears to be returning to Lower Manhattan, as neighborhood site EVGrieve reports that Coyote Ugly signage has appeared indoors at 233 East 14th Street, between Second and Third Avenues.

The arrival of signage follows a recent liquor license application from Coyote Ugly ownership for that address, according to EVGrieve.

In a video created by owner Liliana Lovell at the time of the East Village location closure, she alluded to a new space for the bar on 14th Street that would be a "little bit nicer" and have "better bathrooms."

Coyote Ugly opened in 1993, but it skyrocketed to global fame after a 2000 movie called "Coyote Ugly," about a 21-year-old songwriter who moves to New York City to pursue her dreams but gets sidetracked by the notoriety she receives from her day job working at Coyote Ugly.
