WEST VILLAGE, NY – Manhattan's first public beach will jut into the Hudson River, plans show.

The sandy area, along with a sports field, a salt marsh and a dog run, will make up the Gansevoort Peninsula Park at Little West 12th Street. Construction is expected to start in the spring.

The Hudson River Park Trust announced Thursday three Requests for Proposals for the project, which will provide direct waterfront access for the public.

The $70 million project will be funded by the city and through earmarked trust funds and is expected to open in the spring of 2023.

The Gansevoort Peninsula will include a sandy beach area with kayak access, a lawn and seating area, a large sports field, a salt marsh, a dog run, picnic tables and lounge chairs.

The Whitney Museum of American Art will also build "Day's End" by David Hammons, which will be one of the country's largest public art projects, on the southern edge of the peninsula.

"We are thrilled that the Trust is continuing to build on the success of the recently opened and very popular Pier 26 with the redevelopment of Gansevoort Peninsula," said Deputy Mayor Vicki Been in a prepared statement. "The creative and unique design will add to New York City's diverse and ever-growing selection of world class parks and community spaces."
