GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — A nearly century old cafe in Greenwich Village made Food & Wine magazine's list of the best coffee shops in America.

Caffe Reggio was among three New York City coffee shops that made the list, according to the magazine's two year investigation on the best coffee and "the finest places for gathering around coffee."

Sey Coffee in Williamsburg was named number one in the country — but the MacDougal Street cafe was still among the nation's best, the magazine found. Another one of the best this year is Box Kite NYC in the Upper West Side.

Caffe Reggio, on MacDougal Street near West Third Street, first opened in 1927 after Domenico Parisi bought an espresso machine with his life savings.

He imported it from Italy — introducing the U.S. to its first cappuccino. The 1902-made espresso machine still sits in the cafe, according to Caffe Reggio.

"Given pride of place in the caffe, the machine symbolizes our rich history as pioneers of taste," the shop says on its website.

The cafe also serves paninis, soups, pasta, and breakfast dishes.

The Food & Wine reporter surveyed shops through anonymous visits and no free samples, visiting 40 states in one year, according to Food & Wine. Check out Food & Wine's list of the country's best coffee shops in 2019 here.
