MTA Contactless Payment Installed At All Manhattan Stations

The MTA on Tuesday announced that all Manhattan stations are now equipped with the OMNY contactless-payment system.

MANHATTAN, NY — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced Tuesday that it has successfully installed contactless fare payment at all 151 Manhattan subway stations and all 800-plus Manhattan buses.

Every station in the borough is now equipped with contactless OMNY readers, which allow customers to pay their fare using bank cards, smartphones, and wearable technology.

OMNY is now available at 348 of the 472 subways stations in the New York City subway system. Manhattan is the third borough, joining the Bronx and Staten Island, to have all of its stations equipped with the contactless payment method.

"The OMNY train rolls on," said OMNY Executive Al Putre, in a news release. "Since launching the public pilot in late May of last year, we have methodically maintained our schedule and remain on pace to be everywhere in the system by the end of the year. It bears repeating that not even a global pandemic can hold us back."

Roughly 1.72 million different bank cards or smart devices have been tapped by riders using OMNY since May 2019, with 110,000 taps now occurring on a typical weekday, according to the MTA.

"OMNY's consistent progress is emblematic of the way we have approached modernizing our system," said Interim New York City Transit President Sarah Feinberg, in a news release. "Our customers love it and I look forward to every station being OMNY-equipped."

OMNY readers accept contactless cards from Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay.
