NYC Public Schools Could Face Budget Cuts Under Trump
Leonie Haimson, director of Class Size Matters, will lead a discussion on the threat Monday evening in the West Village.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Leonie Haimson, director of Class Size Matters, will lead a discussion Monday night at a meeting for Community Board 3 in the West Village about "Betsy DeVos, the threat she poses to public education and how to oppose her."
Haimson, a longtime champion of public school parents and children, is the founder and executive director of Class Size Matters, a non-profit organization that advocates for smaller classes in public schools in NYC and the rest of the country. The mission will face a challenge in President-elect Donald Trump's appointment of Betsy DeVos as secretary of Education.
In November, the New York Times wrote, "It is hard to find anyone more passionate about the idea of steering public dollars away from traditional public schools than Betsy DeVos, Donald J. Trump’s pick as the cabinet secretary overseeing the nation’s education system."

And in a newsletter from Class Size Matters this December, NYU Professor of Education Diane Ravich wrote, "At the national level, given the priorities of Donald Trump and his pick of Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary, we must all work together to protect our public schools from privateers and profiteers who want to defund and dismantle our public schools."
The meeting will take place at Little Red School House, 272 Sixth Ave., at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
