'The Pope Of Greenwich Village' In The Works For TV: Report

The popular 80's film based in Greenwich Village starred a young Mickey Rourke trying to start a restaurant in the city.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — "Right now, I'm the Pope of Greenwich Village," Mickey Rourke's character says as he slams his fists together talking to a mafia boss in the 1980's film "The Pope Of Greenwich Village."

The film created quite the buzz when it came out in 1984, and Deadline reports that the story is coming back to the screen in the form of an eight-part miniseries.

The entertainment news site recently announced that original producers on the film Hawk Koch and Gene Kirkwood have created a team of critically acclaimed writers and directors to make a TV series based on the best-selling 1979 book and its 1984 screen adaptation.

The "Pope of Greenwich Village" starred Mickey Rourke as the protagonist, Eric Roberts, Daryl Hannah, and Geraldine Page. The plot revolves around two cousins Charlie (Rourke) and Paulie (Roberts), who live and work in Greenwich Village with dreams of one day owning a restaurant.

The two eventually get into trouble after they unknowingly rob the mob and face the repercussions.

Writer and director George Gallo will also be part of the team creating the new miniseries, and he emphasized to Deadline that the story is a "portrait of New York City."

"The Pope of Greenwich Village isn't just a great story, (which it most certainly is) it's a portrait of New York City in the 1970s/'80s," Gallo said to Deadline.

There is no specific timeline on when the miniseries will be ready or what channel and platform it will air on.

Additionally, there is no news on which actors will be featured in the miniseries, or if any of the original characters will reprise their roles.
