Village School Plans To Raze Playground For New Building

The West Village private school aims to build a three-story extension with new classroom and lab space.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — The Village Community School plans to expand it's W. 10th Street campus with a new building on the site of its outdoor playground, reported The Villager.

The kindergarten through eighth grade school at 272 W. 10th Street aims to beef up its footprint with a three-story extension, featuring new classroom and lab space, an underground gym and a rooftop yard, the newspaper reported.

School officials have had their sights on the expansion for years and now are applying to the city's Board of Standards and Appeals to amend plans approved in 2001. The new application seeks permission to build on additional portions of the lot for a more functional design, according to an attorney for the Village Community School.

“The reason that this particular layout was chosen was to maximize the efficiency of the layout and the ability to use this space to satisfy the school’s individual programming," said Richard Lobel during a presentation on the school plan at Community Board 2's Land Use and Business Development Committee on Oct. 10, The Villager reported.
