West Village City Council Candidate Forum: How To Watch

On May 10, Village Preservation will host a forum with the candidates vying to replace Corey Johnson in the City Council.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Village Preservation, a nonprofit that honors and fights to preserve the architecture of Lower Manhattan, will host a forum in May with the candidates running for City Council District 3.

The candidates are battling it out to replace the term-limited Speaker and City Councilmember Corey Johnson. Johnson has represented the West Village since 2014.

While Election Day isn't until November, the Democratic Primary that will almost certainly decide countless races across New York City is less than two months away on June 22.

Despite the broader reach of the importance of the mayor, comptroller, and public advocate's races going on in 2021 — there might be no more significant race for West Village residents than the one for City Council District 3.

The candidate who succeeds Johnson will be the leading representative in City Hall for the neighborhood, along with Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, and parts of the Flatiron, SoHo, and the Upper West Side.

Village Preservation will hold the candidate forum at 6 p.m. on May 10. The nonprofit says the forum will be a "unique opportunity to hear from candidates about preservation, development, and planning issues in our neighborhood, and how they will deal with them as city councilmember."

Candidates so far confirmed for the forum are Erik Bottcher, Marni Halasa, Leslie Boghosian Murphy, and Arthur Schwartz.
