West Village COVID-19 Rate Rises As Lower Manhattan Jumps Up

West Village is outpacing the low COVID rates seen in Greenwich Village but doesn't compare to Battery Park City's rate of over 4 percent.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — The coronavirus rate in the West Village is rising again, matching a spike in the positivity rate seen across Lower Manhattan, according to the latest data from the city.

The new data, which shows COVID-19 testing results for every New York City ZIP code between Nov. 14 and Nov. 20, shows a continued citywide increase in the percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive.

On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a new yellow zone for a large portion of Upper Manhattan. Still, it is actually a ZIP code closer to the West Village with the highest positivity rate in the city from Nov. 14 to 20th.

Let's first start with the West Village and Greenwich Village.

The positivity rate in the West Village's 10014 ZIP code was 2.5 percent in the week of Nov. 14 to 20th, according to city data. That is up from the 1.41 percent positive rate from Nov. 6 to 12th and the 2.04 percent positive rate from Nov. 2 to 8th.

The rates were considerably lower in the two other ZIP codes that include Greenwich Village.

Here is the updated COVID-19 numbers for the three ZIP codes that make up Greenwich Village and the West Village from Nov. 14 to 20th.

  • 10011 — Chelsea/Greenwich Village: 2,932 people tested, 41 new cases, 1.4 percent positivity.
  • 10012 — Greenwich Village/SoHo: 1,848 people tested, 16 new cases, 0.87 percent positivity.
  • 10014 — West Village/Hudson Yards: 1,763 people tested, 44 new cases, 2.5 percent rate.

The West Village's ZIP code percent positive rate was not the highest in Lower Manhattan.

Taking home that unfortunate distinction was Battery Park City's 10287 ZIP code, which had a 4.05 percent positivity rate from Nov. 14 to 20th.

It was the highest rate in Manhattan during the period.

Tribeca's 10007 ZIP code also finished as the sixth-highest rate in Manhattan during the period at 3.07 percent.

While Battery Park and Tribeca's rates are no doubt high, both ZIP codes are two of the smallest in the city, and the respective rates came from fewer than 11 positive tests in each area.

In a Tuesday morning press conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio began by imploring New Yorkers not to travel at all, noting that he would be separated from loved ones whom he typically sees every Thanksgiving.

"If you do not need to travel, don't travel," he said.
