Another Traffic Accident at Wilson and Muncey in West Islip
Despite an intersection prone to accidents, Town of Islip takes no action
This evening saw another accident at the intersection of Wilson Place and Muncey Road in West Islip. Accidents at this intersection have been too common of an occurrence that a traffic study was requested by a resident in 2015. Town of Islip Supervisor responsible for traffic safety Peter Kletchka concluded that a four way stop sign was not warranted despite there being a history of accidents at this intersection. The westbound Muncey Road as it approaches Wilson Place contains a curve and a slight dip in the road which coupled with excessive speed can lead to a dangerous accident when a driver is pulling out of Wilson Place . Tonight's accident saw two cars winding up on a homeowner's property on Muncey Road with one of the cars hitting a homeowners van parked in his driveway. The Wilson Place stop sign on the south side of Muncey Road was damaged and is now missing the sign with only the pole remaining.
A West Islip resident was in an accident at this intersection in February and bystanders at the scene tonight said there was another accident about six weeks ago. Peter Kletchka is notified when accidents occur at this intersection and while he obtains the accident report no action is taken. The police officer at the scene tonight recommended notifying the third precinct if the town continues to do nothing.
