DeMaio selected three videos from his class to submit for competition. “Save the Ocean!” by Layla Kelly, Sophia Lastorino and Lena Okurowski spotlighted ways in which people can help achieve the title goal; Klara Rubano’s “Beach Cleanup” dealt with how and why we need to clean the beach; and “Do Your Part!” by Tori Cohen focused on picking up trash, saving paper and planting trees.

The judging team was made up of educators, environmental advocates and school administrators, choosing 10 winners out of a total of 207 submissions. “Save the Ocean!” was named a winner, earning the class a $100 gift card from PSEG.

“What inspired us to enter this contest and why it was worth doing it was that we wanted to help the environment because water animals are getting hurt and that’s not fair,” DeMaio said. “They should be treated the way you want to be treated.”
