GoFundMe Raises Over $40K For West Islip Family Who Lost Father

After a longtime local resident died on the job last week, the community came together to raise money for his wife and son.

WEST ISLIP, NY — The West Islip community came together to raise over $43,000 for the family of a longtime local resident who died in a tragic accident at work in New York City last month.

Scott Keegan, who has lived in West Islip for 45 years, died on Feb. 26 in a fatal accident while on the job. He graduated from West Islip High School in 1986 and continued to raise his child with his wife in the area. He was a member of the sheet metal workers, local union 28, for the past 24 years.

In order to help support Keegan's family, including his son who suffers from serious medical issues, another local resident, Susan Gianiotis-Nappo, started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe.

"Scott was a loving husband and father, he was full of life, and would do anything for anybody. He was beloved by all that knew him," she wrote on the page. "Scott was larger than life with a huge personality. Anytime he walked into a room he captured everyone's attention."

She wanted to raise at least $30,000 for the family since, according to Gianiotis-Nappo, they currently have "no foreseeable income."

In less than a week, the fundraiser currently raised a total of $43,954.

"The family is so very appreciative of the outpouring of support," Gianiotis wrote in an update. "We thank everyone for their generosity during this difficult time."
