Long Island Severe Weather Update

Heavy rain, gusty winds, flash flooding and even hail possible on Sunday. Check out the latest forecast.

Sunday will not be a beach day on Long Island.

In fact, you may just want to stay inside all day. Rain is expected throughout the day and the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms has led the National Weather Service to issue a hazardous weather outlook for the region.

The threat of severe weather will be at its highest in the afternoon and evening, the NWS says. Thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy rain (approaching an inch an hour), damaging wind gusts of at least 58 mph and small hail.

Before the rain arrives, a coastal flood advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for southern Nassau. Flooding of the most vulnerable shore roads and basements will be possible.

According to AccuWeather, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are typical during this time of the year, but the storms that are expected to fire during the afternoon and evening on Sunday will be rather volatile.
