Man Charged With Stealing Boat From West Islip Home: Police

The 32-year-old was caught after the boat, which had been reported stolen, became disabled in the surf near Cedar Beach, police said.

WEST ISLIP, NY — A Lindenhurst man was arrested for stealing a boat from a West Islip home on Wednesday, according to Suffolk police. A man reported his 1987 24-foot Romarine commercial crabbing vessel was stolen from the canal at his home on Oak Neck Lane, police said. The man posted the incident on social media and was told that his vessel was seen being driven in the Great South Bay by an unknown person, police said.

Then two officers were patrolling the oceanfront west of Cedar Beach at 12 p.m. when a lifeguard told them that there was an occupied vessel that appeared to be disabled in the surf. The officers responded to the scene and detained a man and woman who exited the boat at 12:08 p.m.

After an investigation, 32-year-old William Deppisch, was charged with fourth degree grand larceny, police said. The woman was not charged.

The stolen vessel was moved off the beach by officers and towed to the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau at Timber Point. The boat was later returned to its owner.
