September 11: How Will You Observe the Anniversary of 9/11?

Those who were adults on Sept. 11, 2001 will never forget the day's horrors, the deeply blue skies turned to smoke and ash as buildings burned and collapsed.

And young children exposed to the relentless rebroadcasts of the jets hitting the Twin Towers won't easily erase those memories, either.

Numerous commemorations are planned across Long Island Tuesday but many seem muted by comparison to those of previous years, perhaps restrained by both the realities of weekday schedules and the passage of time.

But for some West Islip residents the pain remains as they find themselves coping each day with personal losses. Others regularly pass the town street signs or parks displaying names that remind us all of who was lost that day.

While some mourn in public commemorations, other residents say they will not watch TV, to avoid the reminders and the repetition of the terror.
