“Joe had a larger than life personality which brought so much happiness to many people, especially to those who least expected to find a flicker of hope in uncertain time in their lives.” Shared Mary Ann Pietanza Coonan (Joe’s wife).
“Trainer Joe” did not start his career as an athletic trainer, but his love of sports is what ultimately shaped the course of his life. He was known as Trainer Joe at St. John’s, but to his family he was affectionately known as Joe, Dad, Daddykins (from his daughter Amy), “Son” by his father and Surfer Joe, by his own admission.
