Thousands Without Power In Town Of Islip

The heavy rain and winds Monday has caused power outages and flooding within the town.

TOWN OF ISLIP, NY — Heavy rain and strong winds on Monday could cause coastal flooding and power outages in several communities across Long Island — including in many areas within the Town of Islip. The forecast calls for winds up to 70 mph, showers which could last through Monday night and possible thunderstorms. In addition to flooding, the storm is expected to cause downed trees and power lines in some areas.

Officials say that Islip town crews have been preparing for the storm, fueling all vehicles, chainsaws and pumps. Maintenance teams have been dispatched to check the town's five pump stations. In addition, town tankers are out in the field and have begun pumping, all the while maintaining social distancing guidelines.

"As we continue to adapt to the challenges of the current public health pandemic, adhering to social distancing and safe workplace practices, our Town remains ready to assist and respond to emergencies, in order to ensure our residents’ safety," Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter said.
