LONG ISLAND, NY - In her victory speech during the midterm elections last week, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren gave a shoutout to candidate Liuba Grechen Shirley.
Grechen Shirley, a democratic challenger, lost her race for the second congressional district. Republican Peter King was elected to his 14th term in Congress after a close race.
However, Grechen Shirley's campaign was still a great inspiration for many female politicians.

In her speech after beating out Republican opponent Geoff Diehl., Warren described a phone call with first time candidate after meeting her earlier this year.
"Now Liuba was running a tough race for Congress and the pundits were giving her no chance of winning, none at all. But that's not what Liuba was worried about on the day I called, no she was worried about her 2-year-old son Nicholas who has tripped on a toy and broken his leg," she said. "Now, she could've given up but she didn't. Instead she practiced her stump speech while she gave Nicky and his sister their baths and she balanced fundraising calls with calls to the insurance company."

Warren compared Grechen Shirley's situation to when she was working as a teacher at the University of Houston while taking care of her two children.
She also stated that despite the results, Grechen Shirley still made change by being the first woman ever to get federal officials to approve using campaign funds for child care.
