Students at West Islip’s Beach Street and Udall Road middle schools recently
participated in Poetry Picnics to celebrate National Poetry Month, exploring their creativity
by writing poetry outdoors.

At Beach Street, students went outside with librarian Lisa Cosgrove, writing various
types of poems as they sat on blankets and enjoyed snacks.

During ELA classes at Udall, librarian Denise Lamattina invited students to the
library courtyard. Students drew on their prior experiences and applied their reflective
abilities to create and share artistic poems.
