West Islip School Budget, Trustee Election

Here's what you need to know before heading to the polls next week.

WEST ISLIP, NY — Residents in the West Islip School District will head to the polls next week to cast their ballots for a proposed school budget and to elect school board trustees.

Polls will be open on May 18 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at West Islip High School.

The Board of Education is proposing a $127.5 million budget for the 2021-22 school year.

That represents a 2.49 percent spending increase over the current year and it comes with a 1.60 percent hike in the school tax levy.

Also on the ballot will be whether or not to approve a proposition to the use of monies located in the district’s capital reserve fund to complete several projects districtwide. The total cost of the project will not exceed $1.68 million and any unspent monies will be returned to the reserve.

Two at-large seats are up for grabs on the West Islip Board of Education. Incumbent Richard Antoniello will be up against challengers Roy Tarantola and Debbie Brown for the open spots.

Incumbent Steven Gellar will not be running.
