West Islip Students Honor Veterans in Unique History Event

Juniors honor those who served and learn a history lesson at the same time.

In recognition of Veterans Day, eleventh-grade students at West Islip High School honored veterans of all ages who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Sponsored by Cablevision Power to Learn, the HISTORY “Take A Veteran to School” event is focused on helping students better appreciate the sacrifices made by our nation’s service men and women, as well as their families. Senator Phil Boyle participated in the event.

After introductions and opening remarks from Principal Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, Senator Boyle spoke to the students about the importance of honoring veterans and the roles they play in our community.

The students then watched a clip from HISTORY’s The Story of Veterans Day and History Teacher Mark Murphy discussed the meaning of Veterans Day.

The students acknowledged the veterans in attendance and Senator Boyle and Cablevision representatives presented a $5,000 contribution to the West Islip American Legion – Post 1738.

“The veterans we honor today are heroes in every sense of the word and I am proud to be part of this program from Cablevision and HISTORY that recognizes their service to our country,” said Boyle.  “Because of their many sacrifices, we as Americans are blessed with so many freedoms. Today we thank each of these veterans who have heeded the call and have served honorably to defend the land we hold dear.”
