Wind and Rain Battering Long Island, Power Outages Reported

More than an inch of rain could fall across the region Monday.

The sun is on hiatus Monday as the work week is off to a wet and windy start on Long Island.

The rain is expected to be heavy at times throughout the day and wind gusts could near 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 2:51 p.m., more than 600 Long Islanders are without power, according to the PSEG Long Island outage map.

A coastal flood statement is in effect until 2 p.m. for the North Shore in Nassau County. Minor flooding of the most vulnerable short roads and/or basements is possible, the NWS says.

The heaviest rain is expected into the early afternoon. Showers will remain likely Monday night, with a possible thunderstorm in the forecast after 2 a.m. More than an inch of rain could fall in total on some parts of the island before things dry up Tuesday morning, the NWS says.

A dense fog advisory for the entire island is in effect from 8 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Dense fog, reducing visibilities on the roadways to less than a quarter mile, will affect the South Shore around sunset Monday and then spread north, the NWS says.
