Father's Day is Sunday (Don't Panic): Ideas

Even if you think it's the thought that counts, here are some places to start thinking.

Two things happen each year at this time: Father's Day, and that moment when you simultaneously realize you left getting a present for your father until the last minute, and you simply cannot buy him another tie.

Have no fear. There are many Yorktown shops and businesses that can help you get a your father present right before Father's Day, even if it is already Friday. "Friday? People come in for their gifts on Sunday," said Lewis Stern of Yorktown Wines and Liquors on Commerce Street in Yorktown Heights.

Stern suggests a boxed set of a bottle of 12-year-old Glenlivet Scotch that comes with two glasses as a great gift for your father. Glenlivet is a single malt scotch. Stern can also make up a case of assorted wines—12 bottles—for a 15% discount. The shop also stocks many nice pinot noirs or cabernet sauvignons that range from $10 a bottle up to $200, he said.

Is your dad a tool nut? Mitchell Hardware on Commerce Street has a Father's Day special: a 128-piece tool set for $79.99. Mitchell's has walls and aisles of various tools for various chores around the house in addition to the set.

Everyone thinks to buy some bling for their mom on Mother's Day, but maybe dad would also appreciate some jewelry. Debra Sorgini of Throg's Neck Jewelry, also on Commerce Street, recommended Nomination bracelets from Italy as a great gift. These are very masculine black bracelets with assorted sliding charms that can be added, she said.

Sorgini also pointed out men's silver and two-tone bracelets and other items from Scott Kay. "We have cuff links galore," she said. "And you can always get dad an earring." One heavy silver bracelet was $125. The store is also holding a sale on Ebel watches and has other brands of watches.

If you are not sure what dad wants, Throg's Neck also sells gift certificates, Sogini added.

Why don't you help your father work on his golf swing? A half-hour golf lesson at Yorktown Golf and Baseball Center on Lexington Avenue in Mohegan Lake might cure that slice or hook. "We do a lot of gift certificates for golf lessons," said Jane Jaffe, manager. "A half hour is $50 and a series of five half hours is $200."

A gift certificate is also good at the batting cages and for miniature gold, she added. The center also has a small pro shop that sells golf balls and gloves and hats.

So, for Father's Day, even if you do believe it is the thought that counts, you do need to start thinking.
