H. Carlton Smith of Somers Dies At 87
Smith was the author of numerous papers on social work.

SOMERS, NY — H. Carlton Smith of Somers passed away peacefully Jan. 24 at the age of 87. He was born in Yonkers in 1930, to Harold and Ruth Smith. He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Smith. Carl is survived by his wife, Louise (née Servodidio), five children and their spouses, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He had great love for his immediate family as well as his extended family.
Smith received his bachelor’s degree at Concordia College in St. Louis in 1950 and his Master’s in Social Work degree at Fordham University in 1954. Carl was an adjunct professor at Fordham University and a full-time professor at N.Y. Medical College.
Prior to his faculty position at N.Y. Medical College, and appointment as director of social work services at the Mental Retardation Institute in Valhalla, Smith served two terms as director of Putnam County’s Mental Health Department. He was a clinician and president of the board of directors at Westchester Exceptional Children’s School in Purdys.

Smith was treasurer and regional president of NYS School Social Workers’ Association and authored numerous papers on social work.
He helped many children and adults who were developmentally disabled. His work to bring dignity and the joys of life to this often forgotten segment of our society will be his legacy.

Visitation will be held at the Clark Funeral Home, 2104 Saw Mill River Road (Rte 35), Yorktown Heights from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 137 Moseman Road, Yorktown Heights, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a charitable contribution do so to any of the following: Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org or Westchester Exceptional Children’s School, North Salem, wecschool.org.
