HUDSON VALLEY, NY — After announcing the liquidation of 19 stores last week, Modell's Sporting Goods has now filed for bankruptcy protection. The remaining 12 Hudson Valley stores will be closed, along with all locations of the 100-year-old family-owned sporting good business.

The stores will begin liquidation sales this Friday. The retailer joins several other sporting goods giants to shutter in recent years as online retail hurt brick-and -mortar sales, like Sports Authority and City Sports. Modell's currently has more than 130 stores on the East Coast.

“This is certainly not the outcome I wanted, and it is one of the most difficult days of my life,” said Mitchell Modell, the company's CEO said in a statement on Wednesday after the Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection was filed in New Jersey.
