Schools Closed for Thanksgiving; Somers Public Menorah Lighting; Winter Storm

1) The third annual Somers Public Menorah lighting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. outside the Elephant Hotel, located on Route 100 and Route 202 in Somers. There will be traditional latkes, doughnuts, chocolate gelt and dreidels for all. The event is free of charge.

2) Lakeland and Yorktown schools will be closed for Thanksgiving recess from Wednesday, Nov. 27 to Friday, Nov. 29. Schools will open on Monday, Dec. 2. The Somers School District will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28 and  Friday, Nov. 29. Wednesday, Nov. 27 will be a half day for students.

3) Be careful out there. The winter storm called Boreas is headed our way from the southwest. Gusts up to 50 miles an hour could down tree limbs and cause power outages, says the National Weather Service.

4) The news that Angelina Jolie had not bought property in Putnam was the best-read article on Hudson Valley Patches yesterday.

5) Food Bank for Westchester officials received good news Monday in the form of a $171,974 state grant to help feed the hungry. Read more about it here.
