SOMERS, NY — A Memorial Day ceremony at the Westchester County Veterans Memorial in Lasdon Park was broadcast and can be watched on the county's YouTube channel.
"The harsh reality is as we lose these ceremonies and symbols we sacrifice them on the altar of health," said County Executive George Latimer. "We avoid those ceremonies and we hope for a brighter day soon.
"I miss St. Patricks Day and I miss opening day for little league, but Memorial Day is a day we cannot forget," he said. "The fact that we won't have those services available to us this year is difficult."

"Today is unique to say the least," said Westchester veterans affairs head Ron Tocci. "What can we do for those whose names are inscribed in memoriam? We try to live up to the expectations of what this country is supposed to be."
The firing team from Eastchester VFW Post 2285 gave the salute.

Later Latimer urged residents to take a few minutes and visit the monuments in their hometowns.
Lasdon Park is open and the memorial can be visited, though the Westchester County Veterans Museum is closed.
