Davidson Resident Awarded Female Leadership Scholarship
Amelia Wyatt of Davidson was recently awarded a 2020 Claes Nobel Future Female Leader Scholarship.
DAVIDSON, NC — Amelia Wyatt of Davidson was recently awarded a 2020 Claes Nobel Future Female Leader Scholarship by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), the organization announced.
Wyatt is one of 10 female high school senior recipients offered the $1,000 scholarship and who demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in their schools and communities.
Says the organization:
"During eighth grade, Amelia was motivated but without direction; she had a knack for illustrating and writing, but she didn’t know its value outside personal satisfaction. But then, she began working for La Escuelita, a bilingual (Spanish/English) dual immersion preschool program that helps Hispanic children of lower socioeconomic status prepare for preschool and long-term success in the education system. Through two years of volunteering, Amelia saw the benefits of empowering the Hispanic community, but by the end of her freshman year, the program was running out of funding. Who would save them? And this is when Amelia said: if not me, then who? If not now, then when? So Amelia wrote a children’s book, in both Spanish and English, about a bird named Ozzie who experiences the difficulties as an immigrant (a story she had learned first-hand with the children and parents of La Escuelita). Her book, Ozzie and the Island, raised $110,000 for La Escuelita’s honor, where Amelia continues to support her Hispanic community."
