3.2 Million Early Votes Cast In NC: How Mecklenburg Is Voting

With one week to go before Election Day, North Carolina voters have already outpaced all of early voting in the last presidential election.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — One week before Election Day, North Carolina voters have outpaced all of early voting in the 2016 general election, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

One week before election day, voter turnout was nearly 47 percent in North Carolina, as well as Mecklenburg County, election officials said.

As of Monday, Oct. 26, 3.22 million voters had cast a ballot through either absentee by-mail or one-stop early voting. By comparison, in 2016, North Carolina voters submitted 3.15 million ballots through either absentee by-mail or one-stop early voting

The last day to request an absentee mail-in ballot in North Carolina is Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.

“If you want to vote by mail, please request your ballot now,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. “But if you miss the request deadline, you can still vote early in person through October 31 or on Election Day, November 3, at your assigned precinct.”

As of Oct. 27, about 56 percent of the 1.44 million requested absentee mail-on ballots had been received by election officials, NCSBE said. More than 2.6 million ballots have been cast through in-person early voting.

Early voting in North Carolina ends on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Here's an update of how early voting is going in Mecklenburg County as of Oct. 27:

  • Ballots cast — 371,326
  • Total turnout — 47.01 percent
  • By-Mail ballots cast — 106,691
  • One-stop voting ballots — 264,635

Statewide, here's how ballots have been cast by party as of Oct. 27:

  • Democratic — 39.76 percent
  • Republican — 30.52 percent
  • Unaffiliated — 29.29 percent
  • Libertarian — 0.37 percent
  • Constitution — 0.04 percent
  • Green — 0.04 percent
