Freezing Rain, Frigid Temperatures: Huntersville's Forecast

The chance of freezing rain moves in later tonight as overnight temperatures dip to nearly freezing. Here's what you can expect this week.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — The brutal blast of arctic air felt throughout North Carolina over the holiday weekend is moving out, however rain — possibly freezing rain — is head our way, according to the National Weather Service.

The chance of rain begins late Tuesday night, NWS said. “A few locations could see a light glaze of ice develop on some surfaces,” it said in a weather bulletin. Heavier rain is expected by Wednesday evening, with as much as 1 to 2 inches falling in some areas.

“The heavy rain falling on moist ground could produce isolated flooding in flood prone areas Wednesday night into Thursday,” NWS said.

The rain will bring a brief reprieve in overnight lows. Tuesday night, the low will be around 33 degrees, however, temperatures on Wednesday night will be much warmer, around 50 degrees. The overnight warmup will be short-lived, however. Overnight lows will return to the low 30s and mid 20s by the end of the week.

A chance of rain or freezing rain, mainly after 3am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 33. East southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Wednesday (Jan. 23)
A chance of rain or freezing rain before 7am, then a chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 55. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Wednesday Night
Showers. Low around 50. South southeast wind 7 to 14 mph becoming west southwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
Thursday (Jan. 24)
Showers likely, mainly before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 56. West southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
